Gyrth Russell, Hon.RI, Hon.ROI, RSMA 1892-1970
Born in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada. He studied art in Boston and then Paris in 1912-14 at the Academie Julian and Atelier Colarossi. Subsequently he made England his home.
He was an official war artist with the Canadian Army during World War I. He was represented by 18 works in the Canadian War Memorial Exhibition at Burlington House in 1919.
He had one man shows at the Howard Roberts Gallery in Cardiff in 1956 and two at Penarth in 1961 and 1966. He exhibited widely in Britain, America and Australia, including Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Royal Society of British Artists and Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts. His work can be found in The Imperial War Museum, The National Maritime Museum, The National Gallery of Canada and the Nova Scotia Museum of Fine Arts.
